Tokagetone is a music toy thingy for the NES, made for Honest Jam 6 - The Pacifist Jam.

Controls (listed as [keyboard on this page's emulator] / [button on the NES controller]):

  • Directional arrows / D-Pad: Move the cursor around
  • X / A: Place a note on the sheet; removes note if already present on the same place; also confirms menu options
  • Z / B: Alternate between these "channels": Square 1, Square 2, Triangle, Noise, Voice
  • Shift / Select: Change the current channel's instrument (each channel has their own list of instruments (*) )
  • Enter / Start: Go to the menu at the bottom, and come back from it

Menu Options:

  • Play/Stop music
  • Load music (from one of 8 slots) (**)
  • Save music (to one of 8 slots) (**)
  • New music (clears current sheet)
  • Change song speed

Jam modifiers used:

  • SCALES. The main "character" is the singing lizard. Another lizard runs below the music sheet when it's playing.
  • KARAOKE. The title/example "music" is made with my own autotuned voice reading different vowels, compressed for NES purposes. "ah é, ó o auê! é o auê, aí" may not be the best lyrics, though...
  • MORE THAN WORDS: Everything is conveyed by symbols/icons (although I explain them here on itch just in case)

(* I didn't have time to illustrate the instruments, or even to curate the list; instruments were just reused from another game; so... you can just press shift/select randomly until you like what you hear 😅)
(** I couldn't figure out how to make it save permanently; if you want to truly save, use a save state)
